As the temperatures drop and I look at the bare space in the corner of my yard that once was a garden, I am reflecting a bit. Several weeks and millions of weeds into gardening this year, I was in tears because I wanted to rip everything out and stomp on it. I was finding no joy in being one with nature. I look back on that and laugh because I am in such awe at what a small space of land can produce. Silly as it sounds (and I know there are others out that who probably won't admit it-I don't blame you!), I get a little misty eyed looking in my panty and freezer at the bounty that that little garden has provided for our family. I know, I'm a total nerd and I am a-ok with that! I have gained knowledge, skill and appreciation that wasn't there before! (Shan I hope this makes you smile. You are the best and I wanna be you when I grow up!-Love ya!)

Labor Day

Over the Labor Day weekend we were able to go up to our cabin in Colorado. On the way there we got to spend time with and stay with my grandma Shirley in LaPoint, UT, visit the Dinosaur Museum in Vernal, visit 2 of my grandpa's gravesides and finally arrive at the cabin. We had such a great time and the kids are already planning the next trip!

Many of you know that we were sure Emmett was going to be a girl from the minute we found out I was pregnant. I would have taken my life's savings to the races on it. I nearly bought girl crib bedding and painted the nursery a soft lavender but something came up the day I was going to do it all. Well, we went to my 20 week appointment, found boy parts, had a shocked giggle session then went on with the unexpected news. Life has moved quickly and we love having our little guy. We rarely think of the daughter that never was, until I catch a glimpse of that small section of dresses at the very back of Kayla's closet that is still wearing it's tags. Well, much to Chris's (will be) dismay (and sorry honey that you are seeing this for the first time with the rest of our blogger friends), the kids and I had a good laugh at Emmett's expense. I discovered 2 things from this "modeling session" if you will...

1. Dresses bring out a photogenic streak in Emmett that I have never seen.
2. Emmett makes the ugliest girl that has ever walked this Earth.

It seems like I blinked and the school year was over! Not to mention how fast her first 6 years of life went by. Kayla LOVED Kindergarten and everything that came with it. She learned so much and I am astonished daily by how well she can read! She loved her teacher and her friends, and says field trips were her favorite. She is such a sweet and smart little girl and we couldn't be prouder! Her little graduation ceremony was so sweet and all the kids did such a great job on their songs.

Or our tree does anyway:) I have been noticing this nest for quite sometime and finally boosted the kids up to take a peek. That was 2 weeks ago and it was empty. Well the kids came running in yesterday, having climbed quite a ways up, shouting that there were eggs in the nest. I was skeptical, but took the climb myself and found these 4 gorgeous little blue eggs.

UPDATE!!!! The babies have come! They are the most hideously beastly things I have ever seen. The eggs are much more beautiful to look at.

Memorial Day at Park City

For the last 3 years we have gone to Park City for Memorial Day. We did some great shopping then went to the Park City Museum. It was a lot of fun and the kids really enjoyed all the mining and jail exhibits.

Spring Has (finally) Sprung!

After weeks of rain we finally got 1 day of sun-and now we're all sunburnt! Chris spent the entire day in the yard (thanks babe!) and in the evening we were able to plant the garden. This map is more so I can remember which is which and what is what! Not pictured in other areas of the yard are cilantro, parsley and dill, strawberries, pumpkins and various melons. I love when all the plants and trees are flowering! It's so beautiful, but sadly it doesn't last long and then everything is just boring green. I need to find some more colorful (and not only in spring) plants!

We started off our Spring Break driving to Cedar City, we then visited with dear friends in Vegas. Next we visited my aunt and cousins in Tehachapi (CA), then headed south to see my parents in Orange. We had a great trip!

Kayla saw someone donating their hair to Locks of Love on TV and decided she would like to do it. Well that she would like US to do it. It was hard for me to let her because everyone comments on her hair and I worried she would feel bad once it was gone. But no! She has loved it, and I have loved how easy it is. No more tears trying to brush through all that hair! It's been really fun for her to learn giving.

We were able to meld traditions from the Hall and Long families and start some of our own. It was nice to be able to focus on the meaning of the Christmas season and teach the kids the importance of Christ's birth and life.

My sweet grandma came to visit for a few days and we went to see the lights at Temple Square. We enjoyed food at Rumbi Island Grill and people watching on the train. The only incident was when Ian tried to get of the train at the wrong door. By the time Grandma and I got him, the doors closed and we found ourselves moving beyond our destination as we watched Chris and Emmett from the windows. Luckily there was one more stop before we went too far South.

Emmett's Birth

I will be adding pictures to this sideshow as I take them, so yes you will have seen some of them, but some will be new. As far as anyone interested in birth details that I have not talked to, I will give a short recap. When Ian was born, he was a little bit bigger than we anticipated and he was born with a broken collarbone. We were worried for a repeat and thus kept close tabs on Emmett's size throughout the pregnancy. We decided to induce at 39 weeks and hoped that he would come sooner! No such luck! So, at 7 am on February 1st, we arrived at the hospital and got admitted. When the nurse checked me at 8am I was only at 2 cm, so yay for me, I got hooked up to a Pitocin IV. I have always been afraid to have Pitocin because have heard of so few people are able to delivery without epidural if they go that route. However, I can honestly say that it wasn't as bad as everyone described it to be! Sure the contractions came quick and with no break but that means the labor went faster! Anyways, contractions started at 9am, and dilation was slow up until a 6 or so. Once I got to a 7, it was about 20 more minutes until I was complete and ready to push!!! So, with about 4 pushes, Emmett was born with his little hand on his head (ouch), just after 1 pm. He was smaller than we had thought (7.14) and thankfully all bones were in tact. Aside from him having a bruised little face, he was the best delivery by far! He is such a sweet little baby and we love having him in our home!!!
On a side note, I would like to thank Chris and Randy (my midwife) for their close attention to Facebook, Cash Cab, and Overhaulin whilst I labored! You guys are the best;)

A few nights ago while having dinner, Kayla was saying the prayer and at one point said, "Please help Grandpa's tooth to get better" Chris peeked at me, I shrugged, and the prayer went on. When she was done we asked if Grandpa had hurt his tooth. She said, "I talked to Grandma today and she said Grandpa has a sweet tooth!" We died laughing, and of course the whole topic came up between her and my mom because Kayla asked her to bring up the Halloween candy she left at their house 2 weeks ago. My mom had to explain that grandpa ate all the gold coins and she would have to find her some new ones. Needless to say, Kayla is not happy with Grandpa!

We did lots of fun hings including the Hogle Zoo, swimming, the Discovery Museum, 24th of July festivities and lots of other fun things. I know it has been forever! I am so behind and have taken NO pictures for the past 2 months. Anyhow, last weekend we were able to go to Rexburg for the 4th. We enjoyed seeing all our old friends and the sites of Rexburg! My sister-in-law Shelly and brother-in-law Trevor blessed their little guy Atticus, so we were able to be there for that too! Since this is the first time and likely the last for a while that Chris's whole family was together, we decided to get family pictures taken. My good friend and photographer extraordinaire, Brianne, was kind enough to agree to this madness. And madness it was! It was pouring rain (as you can see by our hair and shirts) by the time we were done, but she was a great sport and got some fabulous shots. Thanks Brianne!

By the grace of my dear husband, last weekend I was able to go to Denver childless! My sister Whitney lives there and my mom flew up from Las Vegas for a girl's weekend. We had tons of fun going to movies, eating, and shopping. We even got fabulous spa treatments and saw a play. My friend Danielle from the good ol' Mojave days lives near by and was able to come spend Saturday with us! It was so fun to see her and catch up on everything. Here are some pictures of my birthday a few weeks ago. My fabulous hubby got my a red velvet and cream cheese cake and we went to dinner with the kids. Very low key and very nice. Chris had to go out of town, so the kids and I went up to Rexburg to visit our wonderful friends and family there. An Emergency?

Yes! Wanting to talk to Grandma is definitely an emergency!!! So, this morning Kayla is sitting on my lap and says, "I wanna call Grandma." I said, "OK, you know how." After about 30 seconds she hands me the phone and says, "I don't think this is Grandma. I called someone else." This happens quite often, so I didn't really panic until I took the phone and it said "emergency call." I thought to myself, I wonder what number she called, surely it's not 9-1-1! I didn't have to wonder long because the operator on the phone said, "9-1-1 emergency is anybody there?" GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I said something like, "Oh my gosh, I am so sorry, my daughter called." She was really nice and asked me to keep the phone away from her. All day I have been thinking that if she had been upstairs or not right by me I would have had a rude interruption by the police department.
Kayla was super upset when I told her what would have happened had Mommy not been there to talk to them.
The reason for all of this is that my phone is locked and, as I am sure many of your phones do, you have the option to enter your code or make an emergency call. Nice choice KK!!!!! I am just glad and surprised we have made it so far without such incident!

Valentine's Day

For Valentine's Day this year, our friends Kira and Joel came down from Wyoming with their little boy Lucas. Kira and I were roommates in college and she and Joel have spent many V-Days with Chris and me. The top picture (Kira I hope you don't mind that I stole it off your blog) was taken in Idaho Falls when we were all still dating. This Valentine's Day was a little different juggling three kids, but we had a great time visiting, playing games, and eating our traditional Valentine's Day rib dinner. Thanks you guys!

I thought this was the funniest thing I had ever seen! Chris found it and said, "I can totally see Kayla doing something like this to us!" It is from a Baltimore newspaper and shows a picture drawn by an elementary school student and a letter/plea from her mother...

Dear Teacher,

I wish to clarify that I am not now, nor have I ever been, an exotic dancer. I work at Home Depot and I told my daughter how hectic it was last week before the blizzard hit. I told her we sold out every single shovel we had, and then I found one more in the back room, and that several people were fighting over who would get it. Her picture doesn't show me dancing around a pole. It's supposed to depict me selling the last snow shovel we had at Home Depot. From now on I will remember to check her homework more thoroughly before she turns it in.
